New Project Approved: Sustainable Tourism Drives Development in the Guapi-Macacu Basin

The Community-Based Tourism Project in the Guapi-Macacu Bioregion: proposal for participatory itineraries is a new line of action, but one that complements our greater objective, which is to protect the ecosystem in the region. It has the support of the Boticário Foundation and financing from TRÊ Investimento, through the Viva Água Movement, which identified three bioregions around Guanabara Bay with potential for the development of businesses with socio-environmental impact that consider the following pillars: water security; adaptation to climate change; nature conservation; sustainable entrepreneurship.

Ação Socioambiental, which operates in the Guapi-Macacu bioregion and proposes community-based tourism as a sustainable business to be carried out in this region, was the institution chosen to carry out this sustainable business.

The project consists of preparing a diagnosis of the potential and challenges of community-based tourism for the Guapi-Macacu bioregion, through a program of sustainable tourist itineraries and a pilot project in the Boca do Mato and Faraó neighborhoods. At the end, a feasibility analysis, a governance proposal and an action plan will be delivered. Involving existing tourism enterprises in the area that meet the membership criteria developed by Ação Socioambiental, which include the pillars of the Viva Água movement.

In 2024, we will begin collecting data on existing tourist attractions and businesses in the chosen neighborhoods. In parallel, we are seeking partnerships with agencies involved in tourism in Cachoeiras de Macacu (Macatur Tourism Foundation, Municipal Department of Economic Development, Municipal Tourism Council and Sebrae Foundation - Brazilian Support Service for Micro and Small Businesses) so that the product gains relevance and support from local governments. Fieldwork to conduct on-site reconnaissance of the locations was carried out in early January.
